5/30/2023 0 Comments Ghostland edward parnellIt is a unique and elegiac meditation on grief, memory and longing, and of the redemptive power of stories and nature. Ghostland is Parnell's moving exploration of what has haunted our writers and artists - and what is haunting him. Sebald's The Rings of Saturn and Graham Swift's Waterland to the archetypal 'folk horror' film The Wicker Man. James, Arthur Machen and Algernon Blackwood to the children's fantasy novels of Alan Garner and Susan Cooper from W. He explores how these landscapes conjured and shaped a kaleidoscopic spectrum of literature and cinema, from the ghost stories and weird fiction of M. In Ghostland, Parnell goes in search of the 'sequestered places' of the British Isles, our lonely moors, our moss-covered cemeteries, our stark shores and our folkloric woodlands. For comfort, he turned to his bookshelves, back to the ghost stories that obsessed him as a boy, and to the writers through the ages who have attempted to confront what comes after death. SHORTLISTED FOR THE PEN ACKERLEY PRIZE 2020 'A uniquely strange and wonderful work of literature' Philip Hoare 'An exciting new voice' Mark Cocker, author of Crow Country In his late thirties, Edward Parnell found himself trapped in the recurring nightmare of a family tragedy.

5/30/2023 0 Comments Downhill Chance by Donna MorrisseyThe balance of life on Rockbound is precarious and thus fiercely guarded by all who inhabit its lonely domain, but just as a sudden change in the direction of the wind can lead to certain peril at sea, so too can the sudden change in the direction of a man's heart lead to a danger altogether unknown.Įnormously evocative of the power, terror, and dramatic beauty of the Atlantic sea, and unrelenting in its portrait of back-breaking labour, cunning bitterness, and family strife, Rockbound is a story of many passions-love, pride, greed, and yearning - all formed and buffeted on a small island by an unyielding wind and the rocky landscape of the human spirit. His conflicts are both internal and external, locking him in an unceasing struggle for survival sometimes the sea is his enemy, sometimes his own rude behavior, sometimes his best friend Gershom Born, sometimes his secret love for the island teacher Mary Dauphiny but always, inevitably, his Jung relatives and their manifold ambitions for money and power. Filled with dreamy optimism and a love for the unspoken promises of the night sky, David tries to find his way in a narrow, unforgiving, and controlled world. To the harsh domain of Rockbound - governed by the sternly righteous and rapacious Uriah Jung -comes the youthful David Jung to claim his small share of the island. 5/30/2023 0 Comments Wonder woman by greg rucka vol 1It's also a damn pretty book, too - Liam Sharp, Nicola Scott and Bilquis Evely all do an incredible job on art, and it looks that much better on glossy oversized pages. In short about the book itself, this is a fantastic Wonder Woman story that delves deep into her history and character, and an excellent pick for new readers looking for WW comics after enjoying the movie. So the two deluxes collect the entire story in order and you don't have to flip between four regular trades, you can just read the book and not think about all of that nonsense. So I'm just here to say that the two hardcover deluxe editions are THE way to read this run to get the most enjoyment out of it, because the arcs aren't split - all the issues are collected here in their numeric order, just like they were intended to be read in the first place. Greg Rucka's Wonder Woman Rebirth run is an excellent story that not a lot of people appreciated enough due to its weird structuring and collected editions. ― Lemony Snicket, quote from A Series of Unfortunate Events Box: The Complete WreckīookQuoters is a community of passionate readers who enjoy sharing the most meaningful, The truth is that you can never be sure if you have decided on the right thing until the party is over, and by then it is too late to go back and change your mind, which is why the world is filled with people doing terrible things and wearing ugly clothing, and so few volunteers who are able to stop them.” And it might seem right to wear a suit of armor to the party, but there could be several other people wearing the same thing, and you could end up being caught in a flood due to a case of mistaken identity, and find yourself drifting out to sea wishing that you were wearing deep-sea diving equipment after all. It might seem right to wear your favorite pair of shoes, but there could be a sudden flood at the party, and your shoes would be ruined. It might seem right to wear a navy blue suit, for instance, but when you arrive there could be several other people wearing the same thing, and you could end up being handcuffed due to a case of mistaken identity. It is easy to decide on what is wrong to wear to a party, such as deep-sea diving equipment or a pair of large pillows, but deciding what is right is much trickier. “Deciding on the right thing to do in a situation is a bit like deciding on the right thing to wear to a party. 5/30/2023 0 Comments A feast of crows book“Aemon as well.” “Aemon? Maester Aemon? But… he’s one hundred and two years old, my lord, he can’t… you’re sending him and me? Who will tend the ravens? If they’re sick or wounded, who…” “Clydas. “ I’m going? To Eastwatch, my lord? Or… where am I…” “Oldtown.” “Oldtown?” It came out in a squeak. You’re going with Gilly.” “Going?” For a moment Sam did not understand. “You need to get your things together, Sam. Give me more time and I will find whatever there is to be found.” “There is no more time.” Jon sounded sad. There are hundreds I have not looked at yet. “ Did you find who the Others are, where they come from, what they want?” “Not yet, my lord, but it may be that I’ve just been reading the wrong books. I can just convince the lords of the Seven Kingdoms to give us their Valyrian blades, all is saved? That won’t be hard.” His laugh had no mirth in it. 5/30/2023 0 Comments The crown of midnightThe novel opens with Celaena on such a mission, but she stages the target’s death and lets him go free. He kindly even gave us credit for setting him down this path. Lewis read the review, began to take an interest in the whole topic of human rationality, and, improbably, decided to write a book about Kahneman and Tversky. Why isn’t the market for baseball players “efficient”? What is the source of the biases that Beane was able to exploit? Some of the answers to these questions, we suggested, might be found by applying the insights of the Israeli psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky, on whose work behavioral economics greatly relies. We loved the book-and pointed out that, unbeknownst to the author, it was really about behavioral economics, the combination of economics and psychology in which we shared a common interest, and which we had explored together with respect to public policy and law. Beane was a failed Major League Baseball player who went into the personnel side of the business and, by applying superior “metrics,” had remarkable success with a financial underdog. The book, we noted, had become a sensation, despite focussing on what would seem to be the least exciting aspect of professional sports: upper management. In 2003, we reviewed “Moneyball,” Michael Lewis’s book about Billy Beane and the Oakland A’s.
